1. ART AUCTION- JANUARY 25 TH 2014 - THE SUCCESS STORY
When we started the Ray of Light Foundation, our goal was to give a new lease of life for a child with cancer. This is the gift our donors give when they take on and support a child. In our small group of 53 children more than 80% survived because of the quality of care and these success rates are similar to the results from the West. But for this we needed a corpus we could fall back on. That was when Sharan Apparao suggested that I meet artists and ask them to donate works to our children to raise a corpus for treatment and bone marrow transplant, I did not at first understand the magnitude of the task. The scene of contemporary art in India is indeed magnificent with several artists who have established themselves as among the best in the world. Despite being a novice in art, I had heard many of their names and it was with trepidation that I approached the first one on the list- Anjolie Ela Menon. I was immediately impressed with her warmth and generosity. From that meeting and the meetings that followed with other artists, I realized that they are all extremely humane. They generously donated their works and we were able to collect 92 works.
.Our goal was not to sell a piece of art- the works were much more than that, not just because of their incredible beauty, but also because they were gifts given from the heart of every artist to little children with cancer. These works were filled with hope that these children will survive cancer and endure despite all odds.
We sold some of the works to our donors and decided to auction the rest. The auction was held on January 25, 2014 and was conducted by madras Round Table 1 and sponsored by Lebara foundation. The event began with a fashion show by some of our children who had completed treatment and were alive and well. They were instant superstars. In the auction that followed it was clear that they had struck a chord in the heart of the audience. Paintings were sold for far above their base price. Towards the end of the auction some donors who had bought the paintings re-donated them to be sold again and so we raised far more than expected – Rs 13700000! We are extremely grateful to the Lebara foundation and Madras Round Table 1 for their support without which this would not have happened.
2. ROSE DAY 2014
"Rose is a symbol of love, care and concern"
September 22nd of each year is observed as Rose Day, for supporting all those people around the world who are fighting with cancer.
Inception of Rose day: Rose day is observed in the memory of 12 year old Melinda Rose from Canada, who was diagnosed with Askin's Tumour, a rare form of Blood Cancer. Doctors predicted that she will not survive more than a couple of weeks, but she lived six months more. Within that period, she successfully cheered up other cancer patients and their caregivers with her letters, poems, and emails. Rose day is observed to let all cancer patients aware that they can face the disease with strong willpower and spirit.
Ray of Light Foundation celebrated the Rose day for children with cancer on September 21st 2014. This event was specially dedicated to rekindle hope in the life of children suffering from cancer. The day started off with a welcome note by Dr Priya Ramachandran, Founder Trustee, Ray of Light Foundation. The chief guest for the day, Prof Mohammed Rela, Professor, Liver Transplantation and Hepatopancreatic biliary surgery, Global hospital and guest of honour for the day Mr Harbinder Singh Rattha, Managing Director, Rattha Holding Co, participated in the event to bring smiles in the life of these children with cancer.
Actors Jeyam Ravi and Siva Karthikeyan participated to extend their compassion and goodwill in our endeavours of creating happiness in our children. Children were elated to spend their time with the celebrities.
